Hi there! I’m Hettie, the face behind Henrietta Floral & Events. I’ve been wondering where a good place to start my blog would be, and then I thought why not start from the beginning and introduce myself properly to you.
By now if you’ve flicked through my website and Instagram, you would have seen I am obsessed with flowers and designing weddings. I mean, who doesn’t want to be surrounded by beautiful florals and styling props all day? But instead of writing more about that, I thought it would be nicer to connect on a deeper and more personal level so you can get to know me more as Hettie, rather than as a face behind the brand.
I haven’t always been a girly and floral kind of girl. In fact, when I was growing up, I was the opposite. I used to live next door to a dairy farm, and I loved running around with the cows and getting absolutely covered in muck. I’m talking head to toe to the point I wasn’t allowed in the house and would have to be hosed down first - much to my mother’s annoyance! I was one of the boys, and nothing was going to stop me from climbing that tree or wall. I was a daredevil; and a determined one at that.
Confession time: I used to hate anything floral-related, and I mean anything. This hate for flowers clearly started when I was a toddler as I used to ‘help’ my mum with the gardening, and when I say help, I mean that very loosely. Even when she’d plant the carrots I would go along behind her and pull each and every one of them back up again. So, as you can imagine, when she bought me a top with flowers all over it for Christmas, all hell broke loose.
Even until my early twenties I never would have imagined floristry would be my natural calling, and when I turned around to tell my mum a few years ago and said to her that this is the career for me, you can imagine her face and reaction. It was like all of her dreams came true, in a very infuriating way.
I can’t believe I’m writing this, but sometimes, mums do know what’s best.
Now I am one of the girliest girls I know, to the point where I’d probably come across as being pretty stereotypical. I love makeup, fashion, flowers (obviously), all kinds of crap reality TV, interior design, baking and glossy magazines. Don’t worry, there is still a brain in here somewhere as I enjoy reading, watching gruesome documentaries, hiking and even a few different sports.
Now I live in the depths of the Wiltshire countryside with my amazing man, and two very playful and lovable dogs. We have just bought our first home and plan to move in in the next few months, so stay tuned for that. I’m sure I will do a blog post or two about how we put our own twist on things.
I love the life I live and I wouldn’t have done it any other way, but I do have to say it’s funny how things turn out. If you had told little Hettie she’d be a florist and would one day own her own business, she would’ve laughed right in your face.
So that’s me. I will always keep things real. and I’m as transparent and open as they come. I won’t blind you with sayings like ‘I always knew this was the life I would lead’ because that’s not me, and I’d rather be more unconventional.
